Don’t let the no-frills packaging fool you—Something Weird Video is one of the most important names in cult VHS.

Founded by Mike Vraney in 1990, Something Weird specialized in digging up movies that mainstream home-video companies had forgotten: exploitation flicks, regional oddities, drive-in fare, obscurities, and films that might otherwise have disappeared. Releases like The Desert Renegades gave collectors access to corners of film history that were nearly impossible to see anywhere else.

Today, those wonderfully DIY-looking Something Weird tapes have become collectibles themselves. For younger VHS hunters, spotting that distinctive logo is worth a second look: you’re not just finding an obscure movie—you’re finding a piece of the independent video-label culture that helped keep weird cinema alive.
