What if the perfect grandmother could be built instead of born?
Based on Ray Bradbury's beloved story "I Sing the Body Electric!," The Electric Grandmother (1982) is a heartwarming science fiction fantasy starring Academy Award-winning actress Maureen Stapleton. This charming, award-winning television film blends Bradbury's imaginative storytelling with a touching exploration of family, grief, and the extraordinary possibilities of technology.
After losing their mother, three children are introduced to a remarkable invention: a lifelike robotic grandmother designed to provide unconditional love, companionship, and guidance. While some family members eagerly embrace their unusual new addition, one skeptical young girl struggles to accept that a mechanical creation could ever replace the warmth of a real mother. Through patience, kindness, and a little futuristic magic, their extraordinary grandmother teaches them that love can come from the most unexpected places.
Originally broadcast in 1982, this adaptation was directed by Noel Black and features performances by Maureen Stapleton, Edward Herrmann, and Robert MacNaughton. The production received a Peabody Award and an Emmy nomination, earning recognition for its thoughtful storytelling and imaginative approach to family entertainment.
This vintage LCA Home Video release presents the 50-minute film in a classic oversized rental-style clamshell case. An appealing find for Ray Bradbury enthusiasts, collectors of vintage television movies, and fans of nostalgic science fiction, The Electric Grandmother captures a gentler, more sentimental side of the genre that is rarely seen today.
A delightful piece of early 1980s television history and a wonderful addition to any collection of vintage VHS oddities.
